2018 Fixture Announced

Werribee will host its first VFL match at the redeveloped Avalon Airport Oval when it takes on the Casey Demons under lights on Saturday, April 14 next year.

AFL Victoria has today released its 2018 Peter Jackson VFL fixture, confirming the round-two clash with the Demons as Werribee’s first match for premiership points at its revamped home ground.

The historic occasion will follow a repeat of 2017’s Easter Sunday season opener against Geelong at Torquay’s Spring Creek Reserve, this time with Werribee as the away team, and will kick off a run of five straight home games that will give Werribee a prime opportunity to build some early momentum in its first season as a standalone club in 19 years.

In addition, the club has seen its number of home games increased from nine in 2017 to 10 as part of AFL Victoria’s commitment to supporting standalone VFL sides.

Werribee CEO Mark Penaluna welcomed the release of the fixture.

“The launch of our re-developed facility at Avalon Airport Oval is a special event regardless, but the chance to do it under lights will really add something spectacular to the occasion,” said Penaluna.

“Furthermore, the decision to grant an extra home game to standalone clubs is a great initiative from AFL Victoria and provides us with another important opportunity to showcase our venue.”

Among the highlights of Werribee’s 10 home games are clashes with traditional rivals Williamstown and Port Melbourne in rounds three and 10 respectively, a round-four home match against Richmond that will be broadcast live and free on Channel 7, and a first-time encounter with former AFL alignment partner North Melbourne in the final round of the season.

The club will also play Frankston for the first time since 2016 in an away match, with the Dolphins having been re-instated to the VFL for the 2018 season.

Footy fans in the City of Wyndham will also benefit from Werribee’s ongoing off-field alliance with North Melbourne, with the Kangaroos set to play six home games at Avalon Airport Oval.
