Werribee has further bolstered its midfield depth with the signing of reigning Bannockburn best and fairest Jack Brauman.
The 22-year-old has been training at Avalon Airport Oval since early in the pre-season phase but has now been officially confirmed as part of Werribee's primary list for season 2018, joining a growing group of players at the club who hail from the Geelong region.
Brauman, who has aligned himself with Geelong Football League outfit Bell Park for 2018, said he was looking forward to the opportunity to test himself at a higher level after receiving the backing and encouragement of Bannockburn coach and former Werribee midfield coach Peter Riccardi.
"It's pretty exciting. It's my first year at VFL level. It's a great bunch of blokes and great coaches, and I'm excited to see where the year takes us," he said.
"Peter coached here a few years ago, so I just hit him up for a pre-season, he got me up here, and now I'm lucky enough now that I've got a spot on the list."
Brauman's move to join Werribee for its first season as a standalone VFL club in 19 years follows an illustrious 104-game career with Bannockburn in the Geelong & District Football League.
He made an immediate impact as a hard-nosed inside midfielder upon making his senior debut in 2012, winning the first of three best-and-fairest awards at 18 before beginning a three-year stint as co-captain in 2014.
Having followed Brauman's progress in the GDFL, Werribee senior coach John Lamont backed his new charge to adapt to the demands of VFL football and find a place among the club's experienced midfield list.
"He was really keen to start the pre-season, and he's hardly missed a night or put a foot wrong," Lamont said.
"He's a quiet-achiever type. He's just rolled up his sleeves and gone about his business."
"It's a massive step coming in from GDFL footy to make the list, but he's going to get an opportunity against Richmond on Saturday at Punt Road. He's definitely earned that after a terrific pre-season.
"Obviously, the other guys are ahead of Jack at the moment because of their experience, but we're confident he can do well."
