Blast from the Past: Nick Walsh

"Blast from the Past" returns for a chat with Nick Walsh (a.k.a. "Volkov"), part of the Werribee playing group during the glory days of the early 1990s.

Name: Nick Walsh
Nickname: Volkov - it came from a Russian wrestler by the name of Nikolai Volkov. My great old mates from my original footy club, St Peter's, came up with that ridiculous name because the WWF was big at the time. Unfortunately, it has stuck for 35 years.
Games: 65
Goals: 52
Recruited from: Essendon by Peter Robertson
Jumper number: 5
Senior debut: Round 1, 1989 vs Sandringham
Memory of that game: I remember Greg Chapman taking about 15 contested marks at centre half back, and I was very impressed considering he hadn't attended a training session for the pre-season. It just goes to show this training stuff is a bit overrated.
Most memorable game: The 1991 Grand Final Loss - so close, so devastating.
Funniest recollection of your time: I remember a footy trip to Hawaii in 1989 with the Werribee lads that was full of funny moments. I can remember a few of us piling into a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms to watch some "light entertainment" through the shutters. We'd probably get six months' jail for doing that these days.
Life after Werribee: I went back to my home club, Geelong West/St Peter's, for three seasons and retired at 31.
Other clubs/achievements: I had five years in the VFL/AFL system (two with Geelong n the under 19s and reserves and then three at Essendon), five years at Werribee, and five years in the GFL (two years early on at St Peter's and three years at the end of my career with Geelong West/St Peter's). I won a best and fairest at St Peter's in 1985, was runner-up best-and fairest for the Essendon reserves in 1987, and was runner-up best and fairest at Werribee in 1992.
By far my biggest footy disappointment was missing the Werribee 1993 grand final win with a hamstring injury after playing there for five years and watching the club develop from a VFA Division 2 team in 1988 to VFA Division 1 premiers in 1993. It was a great and successful five-year journey that was great to be a part of, but it was sad to miss the big one with injury.
Profession: Finance broker in Geelong.
Family: Wife Mandy and children Sam (22) and Eliza (17).
Home: Highton in sunny Geelong
