It’s official: Fabian Brancatisano and Ben McNamara will both debut for Werribee when it hosts Essendon at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.
Both players were named in Werribee’s extended 27-man squad for the clash with the Bombers on Thursday night but have now been confirmed as part of the final 23.
For Brancatisano, the selection caps a whirlwind few weeks, during which the pacey forward was elevated from Werribee’s supplementary squad to its primary list of 45 and aligned himself with Western Region Football League side Sunshine, having earlier this year spent time with Bendigo Football League outfit Castlemaine.
The former Essendon VFL, Coburg, and Port Melbourne-listed player has looked in stellar touch since linking up with the Kangaroos, booting 11 goals in three WRFL games.
In contrast, McNamara signed on at Avalon Airport Oval for season 2018 late last year but has had to wait for his opportunity for a VFL debut due to fierce competition for spots in Werribee’s backline.
The former Geelong Falcon and St Joseph’s premiership player mounted his ultimately successful case for a call-up with his impressive work as a third tall defender for the Joeys this year in their campaign for back-to-back Geelong Football League flags, playing important roles on the likes of former Geelong and Carlton forward Billie Smedts (now with Leopold) and Geelong VFL-lister Aiden Grace (aligned with St Mary’s).
Brancatisano and McNamara will line up for Werribee against Essendon at 2:10pm on Saturday.
