Werribee stalwart Nathan Laracy could bring almost two and a half years in the VFL wilderness to an end against the Box Hill Hawks on Saturday.
The hard-nosed defender, who is the longest-serving player on the the Werribee list, appears well placed to get the nod for his first senior match since round one of the 2016 season after being named among his side’s initial 27-man squad for the first time this year.
Selection to the final team would be a well-deserved reward for the 28-year-old, who has endured a horror two years battling a persistent posterior cruciate ligament injury but has remained one of the most admired and respected members of the playing group thanks to his tireless work ethic and reputation as the ultimate clubman.
Also in the frame for a possible return are midfielder Ben Moloney and forward Matthew Munro, who have been added to the squad after sitting out last Saturday’s win over Coburg with minor ankle and hamstring complaints respectively, while Jade Cleeland remains a potential inclusion after retaining his spot on the extended bench.
Murray Bushrangers key-position utility Jordan Butts will again line up as 23rd player.
The match kicks off at 1pm on Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval and will again see Werribee and Box Hill vie for the beyondblue Cup with the aim of smashing the stigma surrounding depression and anxiety and showing their support for beyondblue.
