No Day at the Beach for Tigers
Werribee dropped from first to fourth on the VFL ladder following a 40 point loss to Sandringham at a windy Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
Head coach John Lamont was frank in his assessment of the performance of both Werribee sides.
“It was a disappointing day right from the start of the development league, our players thought the wind was going to do it for them, they played selfish football and didn’t think of the team. In the seniors we were kicking with the wind in the first quarter and Sandringham got the first two goals, and our blokes went all conservative and passive, and worried about making mistakes. We needed to play smart in the conditions and we didn’t do it”.
The Tigers were still in the game half way through the last quarter down only 17 points, but a strong finish from the home side saw the margin blow out to 40 points. It was frustrating for Lamont and his coaching staff to watch.
“I am contemplating playing Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ through the Avalon Airport Oval sound system at training, because our blokes just decided that ‘[I will do it my way’. They just got ahead of themselves a bit”.
Lamont did take some positives from the loss.
“It is not all doom and gloom though. Majak Daw was outstanding, really good, he kept us in the game. Leigh Addams had a terrific game first up, if he maintains that form up he won’t be with us for very long”.
The Tigers return to Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday to take on Richmond and preparation will be a bit different according to Lamont.
“We will be asking questions, across the entire playing group, about where their mindset was, going into the game. It will be a very simple focus of back to basics. Back to playing your role, back to the way we want to play, our trademark, which was abandoned on the weekend”
