The 8 Point Game
As the title suggests this was an 8 point game for the Tigers. There was the four points they lost the game by and the four points that they lost by not winning. The Northern Blues had only registered two wins in 8 games and were sitting second bottom on the ladder when the ball was bounced. That counted for nothing in the final wash up.
Head coach John Lamont was disappointed.
“They got two goals just before half time which hurt, we went from 20 points up to just 8 in front. It wasn’t a lack of effort, it was just we got a couple of structural things we got wrong. After half time our midfield group lost the initiative, we lost our way a bit. We just made too many defensive errors and let them in”
The Tigers though didn’t lay down, despite being 5 goals down at three quarter time. Midfield coach Peter Riccardi suggested putting Majak Daw into the centre bounces in the last quarter and he turned the game on its head.
"We kicked 6 goals to two, though one of ours was right on the siren. There was real merit in the last quarter, our blokes showed some real character. We have the bye this week. We will train lightly on Tuesday night, and then have a few nights off to freshen everyone up”
Earlier in the day the Development League Tigers had an amazing come from behind win which really impressed the head coach.
“They showed plenty of spirit. I watched their first half and thought they did everything but score. It is a common theme, they seem to start games feeling out their opposition. While having plenty of the ball they don’t convert that on the scoreboard. They just need to take the initiative early in games more. At one stage they were 40 points down in the third quarter, so they showed great character to get up and win. They should be looking forward to the second half of the year with a view to starting strongly in games. It was a terrific win in the end”
