Rd 16 v Casey Match Report

Werribee Wins with its Second Wind

Suburban football grounds all have their quirks. Remember the mud at Moorabbin, the peanut man at the old Western Oval, and in modern times the wind at Casey Fields. So it came as no shock to the Werribee boys that a pretty fair gale was blowing match day.

Werribee kicked with the wind in the first quarter, but while the scoreboard showed an 8 point first change lead, senior coach John Lamont was not happy.

“We weren’t right on the job early, I thought Casey played better than us and we probably dodged a bullet. They had more scoring shots into the breeze and they hit the post twice. We made a lot of mistakes. They made good use of the wind in the second quarter and we had some work to do.”

Unlike some of its games this year Werribee came out firing in the third quarter after a half time reality check.

“We had to address a few things at half time, and credit to the players they really responded. They used the wind well, the only disappointing thing was the two goals we let Casey get. The weather changed late in the third quarter when the rain came. That slowed the game down and our blokes were really good at the stoppages. I thought it was an outstanding win.”

It was an important win against a side above Werribee on the ladder and has seen the Tigers move into 6th place. Players will do their own recovery Monday night with training on Wednesday and Friday. The Development side will play Williamstown at 11am on Saturday at Burbank Oval and the seniors head to Windy Hill for a clash with the 5th placed Essendon.
