Tigers Earn a Rest
The Werribee Tigers added another top 8 scalp when it defeated Essendon at Windy Hill last Sunday and in the process leapfrogged the Bombers to take 5th place on the VFL ladder.
A match winning second term came at a cost though, losing Scott Sherlock (knee) and Brayden Norris (elbow) to injury early in the quarter.
Senior coach John Lamont as always happy to get the points.
“Really pleasing win and we got a good even contribution from the playing group again. They answered the challenges put to them especially with the injuries to Sherlock and Norris cutting our bench down. We had Wallace, Daw, Reid and Porter up forward, all blokes over 196cm, and they all hit the scoreboard. There were times when we looked to top heavy but when we went quick to them Essendon had no answers, they couldn’t stop them. What I really liked was the way the whole team kept going and competing with the two down. It was a credit to our blokes”
The development squad had another heavy loss against Williamstown and will face them again with the senior boys in Round 19. Werribee has the bye this week, allowing the players to rest up before the game at Point Gellibrand.
“The bye has come at a good time to freshen the players up and deal with some of the injuries. We beat Williamstown earlier in the year and while our track record at Willy is not good this group is a new group and they have had some terrific wins this year. We will have a light week and give the players the weekend off. Some of the development players will go back to local footy this weekend. It is great to be able to prepare for finals now that we are assured of a spot in the 8”.
