In the Dog House
It was always going to be a tough day for the Werribee faithful with the passing of the club president John Nicol earlier in the week. The ground was abuzz with the multicultural day activities around the ground. Upstairs at the pre game function former Prime Minister and Werribee FC patron Julia Gillard was in attendance and guests heard from Julia, Head Coach John Lamont, match day sponsors Tino Ballan and Phil Purdy and AFL Diversity Engagement Manager Kashif Bouns. There was also a performance by Maori singers Tu Kaha. To say it was a packed lunch would be an understatement, especially given the early start.
The moment of silence to honour John Nicol was done with style and respect.
It took 20 rounds for Werribee to be on the Ch. 7 coverage but we believe we delivered a great game and an outstanding match day experience for those viewing the telecast. We should have taken the four points, something not lost on the head coach.
“We were just not quite good enough under pressure. We started badly allowing 4 goals in 13 minutes, but we had more inside 50’s in the first quarter but could not kick a goal. We just made too many fundamental errors.”
The Tigers now head into a finals campaign starting this week with the elimination final on Saturday at North Port Oval against Collingwood starting at 12.10pm. Lamont and his players are looking forward to the challenge.
“We will have a light week training Tuesday and Thursday which has been the norm during the season. Hopefully Sherlock, Sodomaco and Fordham who missed last week should be back. I am confident we will do well”.
