Rd 5 v Williamstown Match Report

Werribee suffered its first loss for the season this weekend. Read the match report inside.

Werribee head coach John Lamont thought the energy level of the players pre-game was pretty good. The conditions were perfect, no wind, no rain, about 19 or 20 degrees and the ground was in pristine condition. Then when the Tigers pounced on the first clearance and goaled in the first 20 seconds of the game not even Nostradamus could have seen what was about to happen. The earth moved off its axis for the Tigers.

Williamstown was the only club to trouble the scoreboard operator from the end of the first minute till the end of the first quarter. Sixteen scoring shots to none, and a quarter time score line of Werribee 1.0.6 to Williamstown 10.6.66. At quarter time John Lamont did not, as he said in the huddle, ‘do his narna,’ rather he implored his players to take responsibility for their opponent, and be harder, more organised and lift their energy levels.

Not much changed for the rest of the game with Williamstown dominating in every aspect of the game and in particular on the scoreboard.

Lamont admitted being beaten by the Seagulls.

“All credit to Williamstown. You have to admire how they went about it. They were superb. We missed tackles, we fumbled, we contested against ourselves and we lost our nerve and went back into our shells. I think confidence may have trickled into complacency and that manifested itself in a lack of desire for the contest, and hardness at the ball. We were given a football lesson and totally outplayed.”

The Tigers will face the other grand final team from 2015 this Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval in the Channel 7 Match of the Round. Werribee v Box Hill Hawks from 11.40 with the undefeated Development Team on after. It is also Past Players and Officials Day.
