The Werribee Football Club is aware of numerous stories run by media channels of late in reference to the abandonment of the 2020 VFL season.
We regularly consult with senior AFL officials and as late as Friday we were assured that this (abandonment of the 2020 VFL season) is not the case and what is being reported is sheer speculation.
Mark Penaluna ably represents our club at these scheduled weekly meetings between the AFL and traditional VFL clubs. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss possible alternative scheduling, logistics, social distancing, and the composition of the VFL in 2020, not to mention a united long term vision for the VFL in 2021 and beyond.
While we know how volatile the football landscape has become in recent times, the AFL is clear in its communication with us and we repeat that we have been told no decision has been made at this time for the VFL season not to go ahead.
This statement serves as clarification for our coaches, players, staff, members and supporters alike of the current status of the VFL and to end misstatements and speculation. We will continue to keep all stakeholders appraised of any changes.
President Martin Carter, CEO Mark Penaluna and the Board of Management continue to meet weekly to discuss the ramifications of COVID-19 on the health, safety and well-being on our football family and our financial status. For any further information please feel free to contact Mark Penaluna.
