Werribee adds mix of experience and youth

18 December 2023

Alongside a number of midfield recruits Werribee has brought in a mix of experience and youth in other positions ahead of next year’s VFL campaign.

Rebounding defender Reuben William and ruckman Darcy Bennett have rejoined the club and arrive alongside nuggety mid-forward Angus Hicks and young talls Olly Northam and Hamish Pierson.

William, who played three AFL games for Brisbane, is back at Werribee after stepped away from the club and VFL footy in 2023, following 12 appearances the previous year.

Bennett, 26, also returns for his second stint at Avalon Airport Oval. The 204cm ruckman spent three years at the club from 2019-21 before taking some time away from footy.

Angus Hicks, a former Murray Bushrangers best and fairest winner, has joined the club following a lengthy period on Richmond’s VFL list and after enjoying his best season of state league footy.

Meanwhile, the club has added to its ruck stocks further with the signing of Olly Northam. The former Geelong Falcon was a standout for St Joseph’s to start 2023 before a broken arm ended his year.

Fellow Falcons graduate and Grovedale defender Hamish Pierson is also set for his first season at VFL level. He played 14 times in the Coates League this year while also training with the Big W.

Werribee football manager Ash Collins said the club has addressed some needs with the five recruits.

“We’re pleased to welcome back both Reuben and Darcy,” Collins said.

“Reuben was keen to return to the level after stepping away due to work commitments. He spent the year with Airport West and Redland Victorian-Point in the QAFL, so has come back with a good base.

“Darcy’s return comes after two years off football and is a great story. He earnt his way back on to the list after impressing and showing some good signs early on in preseason training.

“Angus comes to us after a good stint at Richmond with their VFL program. He’s competitive and tough in the contest and will provide great leadership for the group.

“Olly is a highly competitive and athletic ruck and plays with an aggressiveness similar to Kobe Annand. We look forward to seeing how he develops in our environment.

“Hamish is a promising key defender with good athleticism. His footy really came on this past season and we’re excited for him to continue to learn off the likes of Nick Coughlan and Nathan Cooper.”
