His distinctive bushranger beard has gained a reputation both within the Werribee Football Club and beyond, but Nathan Laracy is preparing to do away with his trademark look in the name of charity.
The popular backman will go under the razor on Wednesday, April 26 for Werribee’s Greatest Shave, in the process aiming to raise $10,000 for the Werribee Mercy Hospital Critical Care Unit.
Laracy’s latest incarnation of facial fur has been some 14 months in the making, but the club’s longest-serving player has no apprehension about forgoing the familiar fuzz in favour of the clean-shaven look, particularly with such a worthy cause as his driving motivation.
“I have always wanted to do something like this for charity, and my housemates were very persuasive,” Laracy said.
“Werribee Mercy Hospital does great work in the community, so the chance to help them out seemed perfect. I am actually looking forward to it.”
“It just sort of collects dust until I wash it, so even though I have had this one for over a year, I won’t miss it. Probably my food will taste better.”
The centrepiece of the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s $85 million redevelopment, the Critical Care Unit will provide life-saving treatment to the Wyndham community.
Mercy Health Medical, Sub Acute, and Palliative Care Services Program Director Fiona Gray said she was “thrilled” with the support being provided by Laracy and the Werribee Football Club to help meet additional fundraising targets.
“The CCU is part of a State Government-funded expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital and will ensure the people of Wyndham and surrounding communities can receive critical care closer to their families,” Ms Gray said.
“Currently, Werribee Mercy Hospital transfers patients from the Emergency Department to other hospitals for lifesaving support because of a lack of these facilities in Wyndham.
“Mercy Health Foundation and the Werribee Hospital Foundation aim to raise an additional $2 million to enhance the furnishings and equipment in the CCU, including a wellness garden for patients.”
Along for the event will be Werribee number-one ticket holder and renowned facial hair expert Merv Hughes, who will provide emotional support for Laracy throughout the ordeal with his trademark one-liners, while well-known Wyndham institution Grindstone Barbers will utilise its specialty old-school cutthroat shaving technique to add an extra element of flair to the occasion.
Werribee’s Greatest Shave will take place at the Werribee Mercy Hospital at 10am on Wednesday, April 26.
