At Local Level: Weekly Player Report - May 4

It was a good weekend for the club returning to the winners list with a 32-point win over Carlton plus some impressive performances from Werribee listed players in other competitions. With local footy back in full swing 14 Werribee players featured across six leagues:

Western Football Netball League:

Michael Selsby – Yarraville Seddon Eagles
Michael Selsby continued to fill the stat sheet in Yarraville’s win over Hoppers Crossing. He had 19 disposals at an impressive 84% efficiency, along with 11 contested possessions, four marks, five clearances and four inside 50s. 

Sam Azzi – Yarraville Seddon Eagles
Stood up in defence in a Yarraville team which restricted Hoppers Crossing to seven goals for the match. Also had 11 disposals, four marks and three tackles. 

Zac Banch – Point Cook Centrals
Was again in the best in the Sharks’ win over Point Cook. Played very well in the midfield with 23 disposals, 12 contested possessions, eight clearances and five inside 50s.   

Geelong Football Netball League:

Olivier Northam – St Joseph’s
Dominated the stat sheet in a win for St Joseph’s and found himself amongst their best players. The ruckman had 30 hitouts, as well as 14 disposals, four marks, seven inside 50s and four tackles, showing his impressive work around the ground. 

Emmanuel Ajang – Geelong West Giants
Continues to put up big numbers when playing for the Giants. Ajang picked up 24 disposals, kicked a goal, went inside 50 six times and took five marks. 

Matthew Keast – St Mary’s (Local Player of the Week)
Dominated in a big win for St Mary’s. Keast put up huge numbers with 26 disposals at 73% efficiency, six clearances, seven tackles as well as three goals from the midfield. 

Gennaro Bove – Newtown & Chilwell
Good to see the forward stringing together some games for Newtown & Chilwell after a tough year on the injury front in 2023. Gennaro battled hard in a seven goal loss to Northam’s St Joseph’s, with 12 disposals, three marks and three tackles. 

Essendon District Football League:

Reuben William - Keilor
Had a very strong game off half-back in a win for Keilor. William picked up 20 disposals at a high efficiency, of 80%, which included 9 contested possessions, and kicked it inside 50 four times.

Cam McLeod – Aberfeldie
McLeod had an extremely efficient game in a tight loss to Pascoe Vale. He went at 100% with his 14 disposals, in a game where he also took intercept marks and laid three tackles. 

Raymond Murphy – Greenvale
Continues to impress in the midfield with 20 disposals, consisting of 14 contested possessions, eight clearances and five tackles. 

Victorian Amateuar Football Association:

Zayne Galea – Williamstown CYMS
Did well in the backline for the CYs in a tough loss to top-four side De La Selle. Picked up 12 disposals, had eight 1%ers and took three intercept grabs. 

Sam Conway – University Blacks
The ruckman played a strong game around the ground in his first appearance for Uni Blacks for the season. While strong in the ruck, he also gathered 14 disposals, including 12 contested, five clearances, three marks and three tackles. 

Ballarat Football Netball League

Joel Cadman – Darley
The new recruit continues his strong start to the season for Darley. Joel kicked two goals, found the ball 17 disposals, where he went at 82% efficiency, and took six marks.

Bellarine Football Netball League:

Ed McCoy - Torquay Tigers

Was good in Torquay's win over Modewarre. Had 11 disposals along with his 19 hitouts, and had two clearances and three tackles.

Werribee Back On Winners List With Victory Over Carlton

Werribee are back on the winners list with a 32-point home victory over the Blue.  

A commanding performance in the first half at Avalon Airport Oval enabled Werribee to secure a convincing victory. The final scores read Werribee 14.10 (94) to Carlton 9.8 (62), lifting Werribee to sixth place on the ladder.

Angus Hicks for the second week in a row got Werribee off to a fast start, kicking the first goal in the first minute. After Carlton drew even, quick goals to Jay Dahlhaus and Connor Thar courtesy of some Jack Riding individual brilliance, made it a 13-point lead at quarter time.

Hudson Garoni converted a tough set shot from the boundary line to maintain his streak of scoring in every game this season. Unfortunately his day came to an end shortly after. Garoni’s goal was followed by one from Flynn Young returning for his first game since Round 1 2023. He finished with two for the day. Three late goals gave Werribee a 32-point lead at the main break. Jack Riding playing across half forward led the way in the first half with 19-disposals.

Carlton kicked the first two goals of the third quarter however Werribee fought back with four consecutive majors extending the half-time lead. After an injury interrupted pre-season Kobe Annand returned for his first game of 2024 and kicked his second career goal while Jay Dahlhaus continued his impressive form with two goals and a mark of the year contender. Stand-in captain Dom Brew found his first goal of the 2024 season, a reward for his 33-disposal game.

Werribee’s first goal of the last term came from Angus Hicks his third of the game. The new recruit capping off a great month of form after earning the Totally Workwear Player of the Round in the defeat to Williamstown in Round 5. A late goal from Flynn Young put the icing on the cake to give Werribee a 32-point victory.

Jack Riding ended the day with 34 disposals, ten marks and ten inside 50s in a best-on-ground performance. Kye Declase was in the best for the fourth consecutive week, gathering 29-diposals and 10 marks. Half-backs Bior Malual and Riley Bice also provided plenty of run and carry all afternoon, picking up 23 and 22 disposals respectively.

Werribee to Unleash Third-Generation Debutant Against Carlton

Werribee will unveil 18 year old midfielder Jake Smith for the Round 6 clash against Carlton, with the youngster to make his club debut.

Senior coach Jimmy Allan made the announcement that the to the playing group ahead of Thursday night’s training session.

Jake becomes the third generation of the Smith bloodline to represent Werribee in the VFL/VFA, following in the footsteps of his father Karl and grandfather Brian.

Smith’s grandfather Brian (Werribee Football Club player #8) represented the club in their inaugural season and went on to play 37 games across three seasons from 1965 to 1967. Smith’s father Karl (Werribee Football Club player #356) likewise played for the club for three seasons; 1988 to 1990. 

When signing with the club, Jake mentioned the importance of these family figures in his footballing journey; “Earlier last year my pa passed away so to carry on what he started I think is going to be really good.”

“My dad’s always been my biggest fan and my pa always loved to come down and watch me throughout my juniors. I’m his youngest grandson and the only boy in my family so footy has always been a big part of their lives and for me to play, they’ve loved it.”

Jake Smith signed for the club over the off-season after a dominant year for the Western Jets in the Coates Talent League. The 18-year-old won the Jets best-and-fairest after averaging 23 disposals and six tackles. His performances earnt him a VFL debut last season, where he played for Williamstown against the Casey Demons late in the season. 

Charlie Byrne joins Jake Smith as a Werribee club debutant for the round 6 clash. Charlie Byrne signed for the club ahead of the 2023 season and bought his time playing for Newtown and Chilwell in the Geelong Football Netball League. It will however be Byrne's third VFL match, earning two appearances for Essendon VFL in 2021, when he was playing with the Murray Bushrangers. 

Jimmy Allan spoke on Byrne's impressive form to start the 2024 season for Newtown and Chilwell which has earnt him a Werribee debut; "He has played a really good block of footy at senior level, been in the best players the last few weeks, playing in a really good competition".  

Amongst the two debutants, a further four changes have been made from the side that went down to Williamstown on Anzac Day. Flynn Young and Kobe Annand both make their first appearances of the 2024 season. Small forward Flynn Young last appeared in Round 1 2023, however his red-hot form for Newtown and Chilwell to start the season, where he has booted 16 goals in two full games, including a 26-disposal and nine goal effort last weekend, has earnt him a 2024 recall. Ruckman Kobe Annand returns for his first game since the 2023 Grand Final after his breakout season last year.

Connor Thar and new recruit Stefan Radovanovic also return for their first game's since rounds two and one respectively. Radovanovic's second game in the black and gold will be up against his former side, making 27 appearances for the Blues across 2021 and 2022.

Who’s Impressing at Local Level: Weekly Player Report – Apr 30

Starting the year with a positive 3-2 level, Werribee players have not only made promising starts to their 2024 VFL campaigns, but also in their respective local leagues. Across the Anzac Day weekend, 19 Werribee players took the field across seven leagues. In the first edition of the weekly local player report of 2024, delve into their performances and identify the next in line as injuries prompt potential line-up changes. 

Western Football Netball League:

Michael Selsby – Yarraville Seddon Eagles
Played another strong game for the Eagles, playing a mix of midfield and forward. In a six-point loss to the Point Cook Centrals, Selsby accumulated 32 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 11 clearances as well as 7 marks and 2 goals in a starring role.

Sam Azzi – Yarraville Seddon Eagles
Played his fifth local game to start the season, and third with the Eagles. Stood tall in the backline with 22 disposals, which included 19 kicks.

Ubil Chol – Caroline Springs
It was another rock-solid game defensively for Chol in Caroline Springs comeback win against Parkside. Offensively Chol impressed with 19 disposals and 6 marks, an effort which saw him named in the best players in the win. 

Zac Banch – Point Cook Centrals
New recruit Zac Banch played a strong game in the midfield as the Sharks defeated Yarraville Seddon in a thriller. Banch picked up 30 disposals, with 17 contested possessions and 13 clearances to go with a big goal. 

Geelong Football Netball League:

Flynn Young – Newtown and Chilwell
Played a huge game in a best-on-ground performance in Newtown’s big win over St. Albans. Young kicked 9 goals, took 11 marks, and accumulated 26 disposals. 

Gennaro Bove – Newtown and Chilwell
Played a mixture of midfield and forward. Was clean and used the ball well from his 21 disposals, 6 marks, 4 clearances, four inside 50s plus a goal. 

Charlie Byrne – Newtown and Chilwell
Has capped off a great month of football. Played a strong defensive and offensive game, with 24 disposals, going at 88% efficiency, and 6 marks. 

Olivier Northam – St Joseph’s
Northam filled the stat sheet in St Joseph’s win. He won 33 hitouts in a strong showing. Northam also gathered 12 disposals at a high efficiency, 5 clearances and 7 tackles. 

Kobe Annand – North Shore
Annand won another ruck battle in a loss for North Shore. His around the ground work also impressed with 15 disposals, including 11 contested, 9 clearances and five inside 50s. 

Jake Smith – Geelong West
Jake Smith continued his great start to his Geelong West Giants career. Despite a loss on the weekend, Smith gathered 23 disposals, 10 contested possessions, 9 marks and five inside 50s. 

Connor Thar – Lara
Very strong outing from Connor Thar in Lara’s win. He accumulated 33 disposals with a huge 22 contested possessions, 6 clearances and 5 tackles through the midfield. 

Ovens & Murray Football Netball League:

Hamish Gilmore – Albury Tigers
Hamish Gilmore had a great defensive game in a huge win for Albury. He carried on his strong form to start 2024, shutting down his opponent to three disposals for the game. While gathering 11 disposals, he had a strong spoiling game, with 7 1%’s, and showed good aggression.  

Essendon District Football League: 
Cam McLeod – Aberfeldie
On the wing Cam McLeod played a consistent four quarter game to get the win against his former side. He picked up 17 disposals at 82% efficiency, while taking 4 marks and continued to work hard up and down the wing the entire match. 

Raymond Murphy – Greenvale
Ray Murphy continued to find the footy on the weekend in a win for Greenvale. It was a tough showing from Murphy with 24 disposals, 11 tackles, 5 clearances and a goal. 

Victorian Amateur Football Association:

Harrison Miller – Williamstown CYMS
In a tough day for Williamstown CYMS, Harry Miller showed good forward craft with his limited opportunities. He was able to find the goals and offer forward pressure with tackles inside 50. 

Zayne Galea – Williamstown CYMS
Zayne Galea played a good defensive game in Williamstown CYMS’ loss. Alongside a strong defensive game, he took 8 marks and found the ball 17 times. 

Ballarat Football Netball League:

Joel Cadman – Darley
New recruit Joel Cadman had another strong outing for Darley to start the season. Playing forward he accumulated the footy, gathering 27 disposals and taking 8 marks. 

Jamie Quick – North Ballarat
Jamie Quick continued to find the goals for North Ballarat in their loss on the weekend. He bobbed up for 2 goals to go with his 11 disposals which included 9 contested.

Werribee fall to Williamstown on ANZAC Day

Werribee faced arch rival Williamstown in an Anzac Day clash in challenging conditions at DSV Stadium.

After a tight tussle early Williamstown enjoyed a 52-point victory 15.11.101 to Werribee's 7.7.49.

Angus Hicks continued his good form kicking the first goal of the ANZAC Day clash. Corey Preston, playing against his former side, kicked a running goal from 50 metres and Werribee went into quarter time trailing by three points.

However kicking with the wind in the second quarter Williamstown dominated with twelve goals to one.  Jack Riding stemming the flow just before half-time. Williamstown took a 53-point lead into the main break.

The third quarter was a highly contested battle with Jack Riding’s second major of the afternoon the solitary goal.

Angus Hicks kicked his second snapping goal of the match to kick off the last quarter. His 18 disposals and 6 clearances an effort which saw him named the Totally Workwear Player of the Round. In the late stages of the match Hudson Garoni continued his streak of kicking a goal in every match of the season, and Emmanual Ajang hit the scoreboard for the first time in 2024.

In Nick Coughlan’s absence Dom Brew stood up as captain with 25 disposals and 13 tackles. Jack Riding’s two goals went with 17 disposals, eight tackles and five marks, in what was his best game of the 2024 season thus far.

Werribee, after a strong start to the season, still boast a healthy 3-2 record going into Carlton at home next round.
