2024 Smithy’s VFL Fixture Released

THE Werribee Football Club is set to make its electric atmosphere a feature of the 2024 season, following today’s release of the Smithy's VFL fixture.

After the Werribee faithful were out in force in 2023, the club will enter next season ready to embrace it all over again, with 10 home games at Avalon Airport Oval in 2024.

As revealed last week, the competition commences on the weekend of March 22-24, aligning with Round 2 of the AFL season, and Werribee begin their season travelling south to Geelong, to face off at GMHBA stadium on Saturday 23rd March at 2:05PM. The Big W then fly up to Southport, to face the Sharks at Fankhauser Reserve in Round 2, starting the season with two away games.

Werribee will return for their first home game in Round 3, facing off against Richmond on Saturday 13th April, at Avalon Airport Oval. In Round 4, they'll enjoy back-to-back home games, hosting GWS at Werribee on Saturday 20th April, giving home fans two weeks of excitement in a row.

Round 5 sees Werribee facing off against Williamstown in an ANZAC Day showdown, this time on Thursday, April 25th at DSV Stadium at 1:05 PM.

2024 brings about more standalone clashes, with all seven VFL standalone clubs (Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Northern Bullants, Southport Sharks, Werribee, and Williamstown) playing each other throughout the season, including Werribee being scheduled to play Williamstown and Southport twice.

There is a competition bye scheduled for SANFL vs. VFL representative match during AFL Gather Round in Adelaide across the weekend of April 5-7.

Wildcard Round has been retained for the 2024 season and will be played over the weekend of August 24-25. It will reinstate the same format as 2023, featuring two matches – 7 v 10 and 8 v 9 – with the two winners advancing to the VFL Finals Series. The top-six teams on the ladder will have a pre-finals bye. The highest-ranked winner from the Wildcard Round will enter the finals as the seventh-placed team.

The VFL Finals Series begins on the weekend of September 2-3 with the 2023 VFL Grand Final scheduled to be played on Sunday, September 24, the weekend before the AFL Grand Final.

VALE: Barry O'Brien

The Werribee Football Club is sad to advise of the passing of former player Barry O’Brien.

In the historical list of Werribee players, Barry O’Brien is forever etched as No. 21. O’Brien was also a member of the first reserves team that proudly donned the Werribee jumpers in 1965. The O’Brien family contributed significantly to the club's inaugural year, as both Barry and his brother Kerryn proudly wore the Tigers' colours, and the family continued to contribute throughout many years of Werribee's history.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the O'Brien family and his many friends.

The Chapel Funeral for Barry O'Brien will be held in Tobin Brothers Wyndham Chapel, 2 Tower Road Werribee on Wed. Feb. 14, 2024 at 10:00 am.
