Krista Woodroffe Strengthens Werribee’s Community Team

Werribee’s community program has gone from strength to strength this 2025 season with the addition of Krista Woodroffe to the administration team in an expanded role.

Krista, who joins as Community Coordinator, brings a wealth of experience across multiple levels of the game. A former VFLW player with Geelong and current coach at Geelong Grammar School, Krista previously worked in a casual role with North Melbourne as a Schools Female Participation Officer, an opportunity that first connected her with Werribee and kick-started her career in football administration.

She later became the AFL Goldfields region’s first female Football Manager, and has also held roles with the AFL as Female Talent Coordinator and Games Development Officer.

Krista’s appointment has been instrumental in bringing Werribee’s partnership with North Melbourne to life. The three-year agreement has seen North Melbourne’s VFLW side rebranded as the North Melbourne Werribee Kangaroos, playing up to four games per season at Avalon Airport Oval, with two games already confirmed for 2025.

Werribee will also increase its involvement in delivering North Melbourne’s Next Generation Academy program in Wyndham, identifying and developing talented young multicultural and Indigenous footballers, a collaboration that first began in 2023.

Speaking on the new partnership, Krista said, “It’s incredibly exciting for WFC to formalise this partnership with the NMFC VFLW and Next Generation Academy programs. This collaboration opens up a clear and inspiring pathway for aspiring male and female footballers in Wyndham to reach the highest levels of the game."

She added, "It perfectly complements our existing VFL team and the strong community programs we’re so proud to manage. It’s a real step forward for WFC and the future of football in our region."

While the North Melbourne partnership has been a major part of her role, Krista has also assisted Shaggy across all aspects of the club’s community programs, from planning and administration to on-the-ground delivery.

General Manager of Business Operations Justin Abrams said; “Krista’s extended appointment to the WFC Community team has been a great decision. Krista has actively had a huge influence with the North Melbourne relationship and involved with the AFLW and Next Gen Academy. Krista plays a pivotal role with the implementation and delivery of all WFC Community and school activity within the Wyndham region.”

Abrams added that Krista has been a huge support to Community Manager Majok and that the community team plays a vital role in strengthening Werribee’s connection both on and off the field within the local community.

Majok, who returned to the club as Community Manager in 2023, oversaw a record-breaking year in 2024, reaching 7,622 participants, including over 5,500 school students across the club’s community programs.

Speaking on Krista’s impact, Ngong said: “Having Krista come on board has been a great addition. She’s brought a fresh perspective, new ideas, and, importantly, a wealth of experience as we continue to show why we have the best community program in the VFL.”

Following our recent 2024 VFL Premiership success, the Werribee Football Club is excited to announce that our full suite of membership packages are now available for 2025.

Round 8: Werribee vs Sandringham (Away)

After three consecutive games at home, Werribee is back on the road this Sunday for a Round 8 clash against Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

The 2:05pm bounce marks Werribee’s first away game in Victoria since Round 2, with interstate trips to Southport and Sydney bookending that match in Rounds 1 and 4.

Werribee will be out to respond after last weekend’s defeat to Box Hill in the Beyond Blue Cup. Despite a spirited seven-goal final quarter, the side fell short by 16 points after the Hawks dominated the first three terms.

Sandringham enters Sunday’s match sitting 19th on the ladder with a 1-5 record to start the 2025 season.

They broke through for their first win three weeks ago with an upset over fifth-placed Footscray and have remained competitive since, falling to Carlton by 18 points last week at IKON Park.

The two sides have met just once since 2019, with Werribee cruising to a 76-point win in 2023. That day, Shaun Mannagh kicked seven goals, Michael Sodomaco slotted four, and Harry Grintell booted a career-best four majors.

Werribee members heading to Trevor Barker Beach Oval this Sunday can score half-price tickets via this link.

The first bounce is at 2:05pm, with the game also streamed live and free on the AFL app and AFL.com.au. Click here to watch the game live.

At Local Level: Weekly Player Report - May 14

A seven-goal final quarter wasn’t enough to get Werribee over the line against Box Hill on the weekend, but there were plenty of positives at local level, with 18 players representing the club across eight different leagues.

Catch up on how the Werribee boys fared in the sixth edition of the 2025 Weekly Local Player Report.

Ovens & Murray Football Netball League:

Archer Gardiner - North Albury

Archer Gardiner impressed yet again for North Albury in their 73-point win over the Wodonga Raiders. Playing predominantly on the wing with stints through the midfield, Gardiner was named among the best afield after collecting a season-high 35 disposals and using the ball with great efficiency. His pressure around the contest was a standout, and he also hit the scoreboard with two goals in a big day.

Foster Gardiner - North Albury

Foster Gardiner was again influential in North Albury’s big win over the Raiders, named among the best in a selfless performance up forward. His pressure was a standout, as it has been in recent weeks, laying seven tackles, and Foster finished off the game gathering close to 20 disposals. The Gardiner twins continue to stack up strong performances for the Hoppers.

Jedd Longmire - Corowa-Rutherglen

Jedd Longmire produced one of his strongest performances of the season in Corowa-Rutherglen’s clash with Myrtleford. The hard-nosed midfielder was a force at the contest, finishing with nine clearances and 13 contested possessions, while also working hard to have an impact on the outside in a well-rounded display.

Ray Murphy - Corowa-Rutherglen

Ray Murphy continues to build form in the midfield for Corowa-Rutherglen, with his work around the contest once again a highlight. He added six clearances and 17 disposals in another solid performance alongside Longmire, despite the side’s tough day against Myrtleford.

Ballarat Football Netball League:

Joel Cadman - Darley

It was a feel-good story for Joel Cadman over the weekend, making a successful return from injury after 232 days on the sidelines. Easing back into the contest with a mix of forward and wing time, Cadman finished with 23 disposals and five inside 50s in a solid performance during Darley’s 50-point win over Ballarat.

Isaac Nixon - Bacchus Marsh

Isaac Nixon also made a successful return from injury, playing his first game of the 2025 season for Bacchus Marsh, and first since Werribee’s pre-season matches, as the Cobras claimed a 15-point win over North Ballarat. Nixon kicked a goal, showed his class with ball in hand, and worked hard to collect seven marks around the ground, helping his side move up to 3-2 for the year.

Rye Penny - Bacchus Marsh

Rye Penny played a key role alongside Nixon in Bacchus Marsh’s win on Saturday, standing out with a well-rounded performance in defence. He provided strong rebound from the back half, using the ball at an elite 87% efficiency, and was rarely beaten in a contest. Penny also took three intercept marks to cap off an impressive all round match down back.

Essendon District Football League:

Hayden Gill - Deer Park

Hayden Gill earned Werribee’s Local Player of the Week after an impressive performance, albeit in Deer Park’s 86-point loss to Strathmore. Splitting his time between ruck and forward, Gill battled hard against a former AFL ruckman, presented well in attack, and worked hard defensively. He finished with 18 disposals and six marks in a strong individual showing.

Reuben Rode - Greenvale

Reuben Rode battled through heavy attention in Greenvale's 48-point loss to Essendon Doutta Stars, following two strong performances since his return from injury. Despite the pressure, Rode still managed to collect 20 disposals and lay five tackles, demonstrating impressive fight throughout the game.

Goulburn Valley Football League:

Dom Gugliotti - Mooroopna

Dom Gugliotti played a mix of his usual role across half-back and time on the wing in Mooroopna’s first win of the 2025 season, an 18-point victory over Shepparton United. In an improved performance both individually and as a team, Gugliotti was clean with ball in hand, finishing with 15 efficient disposals and four tackles in a solid all-round showing.

Geelong Football Netball League:

Tylar Watts - Leopold

Tylar Watts was a key contributor in Leopold’s 19-point loss to Newtown & Chilwell. Splitting his time between ruck and forward, Watts performed well in both roles, getting on top in the hitouts and consistently providing a strong aerial presence. With the Lions trailing by 30 points at the final break, Watts lifted in the last quarter, dominating at stoppages and giving his side direct momentum. While the late surge wasn’t enough to close the gap, his 35 hitouts and five inside 50s showed a strong individual performance.

Charlie Byrne - Newtown & Chilwell

Charlie Byrne delivered his best performance of the season in Newtown & Chilwell’s upset win over Leopold. The experienced defender was solid down back, taking several intercept marks among his six grabs and using the ball efficiently with 22 disposals. He was deservedly named among the Eagles’ best in the 19-point victory.

Liam Kershaw - St. Joseph’s

Liam Kershaw contributed solidly in St. Joseph’s near 100-point win over St. Albans, helping them maintain their position at the top of the ladder. After several strong performances, Kershaw was effective on the wing until a knee scare in the third quarter ended his day early. Despite the setback, he finished with 11 disposals and four tackles.

Cooper Ward - St. Joseph’s

Cooper Ward was named in the best following St. Joseph’s dominant 100-point win over St. Albans. He played predominantly in the midfield, working hard to accumulate plenty of the ball and also making an impact on the scoreboard with three goals.

Western Football Netball League:

Wil Kliszewski - Yarraville Seddon Eagles

Wil Kliszewski continued his standout start to the season in Yarraville Seddon’s dominant 113-point victory, helping the Eagles rise to second on the WFNL ladder. The key forward was once again among the goal scorers, adding two more goals to his tally and moving into the top ten on the league's goal-kicking leaderboard. His work rate and physicality were also both impressive, as he finished with six contested marks out of a total of ten, delivering another strong performance for the Eagles.

Tom Stapleton - Parkside

Tom Stapleton was everywhere on the weekend, earning a spot in the best as Parkside cruised to a ten-goal win over Point Cook Centrals. The ruckman impressed both in the air and at ground level, finishing with 16 contested possessions, eight clearances and seven tackles in a well-rounded performance that stuffed the stat sheet.

Victorian Amateur Football Association:

Harry Miller - Williamstown CYMS

Harry Miller played a key role in Williamstown CYMS’ thrilling four-point win over the previously 3–1 Old Geelong. The small forward worked tirelessly throughout the day, using his strong work rate to gather 16 disposals around the ground. His pressure was a standout, regularly forcing turnovers and disrupting the opposition’s rebound. Miller also hit the scoreboard once again, taking his season tally to eight goals from five games in what’s been a strong start to 2025.

Bellarine Football Netball League:

Jack Henderson - Barwon Heads

The young key forward continued to hit the scoreboard as Barwon Heads recorded a dominant win over Ocean Grove in the Battle of the Bridge. Henderson looked threatening all day, and if not for a few missed opportunities, he could have had a bigger day on the scoresheet. He also showcased his versatility with a stint in the midfield during the second half, where he was strong around the contest and finished with 16 disposals in an impressive all round performance.

Emerson Jeka joins Werribee

Seven rounds into the 2025 Smithy’s VFL season, Werribee is pleased to announce the signing of Emerson Jeka, who joins the club after five seasons at AFL level.

Jeka spent time with both Hawthorn and Geelong during his AFL career.

Hawthorn drafted the 198cm key position player with the club’s first pick in the 2019 Rookie Draft. Once considered a potential first-round selection, a knee injury in his draft year saw him slide to the rookie draft.

After spending his first season developing through scratch matches during the COVID-impacted 2020 campaign, Jeka earned his AFL debut in Round 7 in the 2021 season. He played four AFL games in 2021, including a two-goal performance against Fremantle in just his third appearance. He also impressed at VFL level, kicking 23 goals across the season.

Although used primarily as a forward in the VFL, Jeka was swung into defence in 2022, where he featured in three AFL games.

In 2024, Jeka joined Geelong and played 19 games for their VFL side, bringing his total VFL experience to 52 games. He averaged 18 disposals and six marks per game across the season.

A Werribee local, Jeka played all his junior football for the Altona Vikings and was drafted from the Western Jets. He returned to Altona (WFNL) at the conclusion of his AFL stint.

Football Manager Kyle Hartigan said, “It’s great to have such a quality local Wyndham person and player join our football club. We are really excited to see what he can bring.” Emerson is super talented, and he will be a great addition to our group. Having played at the highest level, he can add value in so many ways.”

Werribee Fall Short as Box Hill Regain Beyond Blue Cup

A seven-goal final quarter wasn’t enough for Werribee, who fell to Box Hill by 16 points.

Werribee went down to the Hawks who reclaimed the Beyond Blue Cup in the annual match to raise awareness around anxiety and depression in the community.

On the field, Box Hill proved too strong, running out 14.9 (93) to 11.11 (77) winners.

Box Hill started brightly, kicking the first two goals of the match before Jack Riding capitalised on a 50-metre penalty to kick Werribee’s opener. Werribee’s inaccuracy hurt them early, finishing the first term with 1.5 and trailing by three points at quarter-time.

The visitors took control in the second quarter, booting four unanswered goals before Anthony Depasquale intercepted a switch kick and slotted his first VFL goal in his third game. Box Hill held a 23-point lead at the main break.

Flynn Young gave Werribee a spark early in the third, converting a long-range set shot after catching a defender holding the ball. Harry Maguire followed up just 90 seconds later with another set shot goal, trimming the margin to under two goals.

However, a six-goal run either side of three-quarter time saw Box Hill surge to a 42-point lead. Werribee responded with their best football of the day, piling on seven goals in a 20-minute burst during the final term, but the damage had been done.

Hudson Garoni added a late goal in the 24th minute to continue his streak of 30 consecutive games with a goal, while defender Spencer Johnson kicked his first career major in his 27th VFL appearance, courtesy of a 50-metre penalty.

Flynn Young’s strong day at half-forward, which included nine score involvements and eight inside 50s, earned him Werribee’s Totally Workwear Player of the Match. Bior Malual continued his excellent 2025 form, finishing with 17 disposals, eight marks and a last-quarter goal.

Down back, Jesse Clark and Ryan Eyers stood up defensively, while Dom Brew (35 disposals, nine tackles) and Angus Hicks (23 disposals, eight tackles) battled hard in the contest.

After kicking his first VFL goal in the second quarter, Anthony Depasquale proved Werribee’s most dangerous forward on the scoresheet, finishing with a team-high three goals. Key forward Harry Maguire was the only other multiple goalkicker, contributing two of his own.
