Malual Farewells Werribee After 101 Games
15 November 2025
Bringing to an end one of Werribee’s great footballing stories, Bior Malual has called time on his VFL career after seven seasons and 101 games in the black and gold.
Malual’s time at Avalon Airport Oval was highlighted by the 2024 premiership, where he became a first-time VFL premiership player in the 82nd game of his career. His final season in 2025 was also his strongest, averaging 16.3 disposals and a career-high 6.3 marks per game while earning his first selection in the VFL Team of the Year squad and finishing equal runner-up in the Bruce Montgomery Trophy alongside fellow retiree Hudson Garoni.
He brought up his 100th VFL game in his penultimate appearance, receiving Werribee life membership in the process, before finishing his career with a season-high 29 disposals and ten marks against the Northern Bullants at Preston City Oval.
Reflecting on his time in the black and gold, Malual said:
“Thank you to the Werribee Football Club for the lifetime memories, the remarkable people, and the friendships that will stay with me forever. I’m truly grateful for everything this club has given me and for an amazing 7½ years, which I value greatly.”
Originally from South Sudan, Malual moved to Australia at just five years old with his five siblings. His journey is a famous one with his family walking 1,500 kilometres to escape from South Sudan to Kenya, before eventually making their way to Australia in 2002.
After settling in Melbourne’s west, Bior’s path to the football club has become club folklore, thanks to a famous 3km time trial during the 2019 pre-season. His older brother was working at the club as Werribee’s Diversity Manager, and following a best-on-ground performance for Airport West in the EDFL Grand Final weeks earlier, Bior was invited to trial. On day one of trials, he ran the time trial in 9 minutes 15 seconds at Princess Park, catching the eye of coach Mark ‘Choco’ Williams.
Malual earned a spot on the 2019 list and debuted in Round 1, finishing with 12 disposals, six marks and a goal. He played 19 games in his debut season, kicked 19 goals, and was invited to the state draft combine, where he recorded the top agility and yo-yo test results. He was also runner-up in the club’s Best First Year Player award behind future AFL draftee Jake Riccardi.
Quickly locking down a consistent spot in Werribee’s best 22, Malual brought up his 50th game in 2023 against Footscray.
He played every game in 2024, averaging 17 disposals and seven marks, finishing top ten in the best and fairest for the third time and capping it off with a premiership medal.
His final season in 2025 began strongly. As the oldest player on the list, Malual produced four Player of the Match performances across the opening 14 rounds before suffering a facial injury in Round 16. After four weeks out, he returned in Round 20 to bring up his 100th VFL game against Southport. He finished with 17 disposals and six marks and said the milestone felt special amid the support he received throughout the week.
“It was an unreal day. We did not get the result in the end, but the whole week in general was very overwhelming with all the love and support I got from the club, friends and family far and wide.”
Across seven seasons in black and gold, Malual finished with 101 games, 44 goals and Werribee Football Club life membership. He also created history, becoming the first South Sudanese player to reach 100 VFL games at a single club.
The Werribee Football Club wishes Bior Malual all the best as he continues his football journey full-time with his local club, Airport West.
It is time to write the next chapter in the history of the Werribee Football Club.
